Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project: Final Breakthrough Of Mountain Tunnel Achieved In Maharashtra's Palghar

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on virtually witnessed the final breakthrough of a 1.5-km-long mountain tunnel of the Mumbai?Ahmedabad bullet train project in Maharashtra Palghar district,

Vaishnaw observed the milestone remotely from Rail Bhawan in New Delhi.

The tunnel forms part of the high-speed rail corridor and is located between the Virar and Boisar bullet train stations.

This 1.5-km-long mountain tunnel is among the longest in Palghar district and is located between the Virar and Boisar bullet train stations. It is the second tunnel breakthrough in Maharashtra, as the first 5-km-long underground tunnel between Thane and BKC was completed in September 2025,? a Railway Ministry press note said.

The breakthrough marks another key construction milestone for the ambitious high-speed rail project, which is progressing across multiple stretches in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project passes through Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Once operational, the corridor is expected to significantly cut travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, covering the entire distance in about 2 hours and 17 minutes, compared to much longer durations by existing rail and road networks.

The project is being implemented with technical and financial assistance from the Japanese government and is based on Japan?s Shinkansen technology.

The advanced tunnelling methods and safety standards are being adopted to meet high-speed rail requirements, particularly in challenging terrains such as mountainous and urban stretches.

The bullet train project is seen as a flagship infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming inter-city travel and setting new benchmarks for rail transport in the country.
