LHB Coaches-brief

An LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) coach is a modern, stainless steel passenger rail coach designed in Germany and manufactured in India. They are equipped with enhanced safety features like anti-climbing devices and fire-retardant materials and have a higher operating speed of 160 km/h, with a design speed of up to 200 km/h, compared to the older 140 km/h ICF coaches. Other advantages include a longer car body for more space, better passenger comfort, LED lighting, 5-pin charging sockets and disc brakes for efficient braking. It also includes four emergency openable windows for quicker evacuation and an Emergency Light Unit (ELU) with a 6-hour backup.

The first LHB coaches were imported from Germany for the Shatabdi Express in 2000, The first manufacturing plant in India was set up in 2001 and presently LHB coaches are being manufactured in Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, Integral Coach Factory, Chennai and Modern Coach Factory, Rae Bareilly.

LHB coaches are gradually replacing the older ICF design coaches across the Indian Railways network.
